Antarctica
Antarctica found in the South Pole is the coldest place on Earth. This is due to it being the furthest from the sun. It is also believed to be the driest and the windiest place on the palnet. With more than 98% of the continent being completely covered in very thick ice, Antartica is at once an extreme challenge and a fascianting place. In many places the ice is more than one mile thick with over 70 lakes bying beneath all this ice. GIven all of these cliamtic conditions, it is virtually impossible for anyone to live in Antartica.
Researchers do go there to conduct experiments and to observe the environment. They have determined that no humans have ever been able to live on Antarctica. They have searched for indicators of prehistoric life from humans either living there or moving through the area. Nothing has been found to indicate that any of these ever took place.
Of course there are other life forms living in Antarctica particularly plants and animals. There are several species of plants and of algae that have been discovered there and documented. It is believed that some micro-organisms live well below the surface of the ice in the various lakes. Research continue to be done in this area.
Some of the animals that thrive in Antarctica include penguins that thrive in the cold, and seals that often feed on the penguins as they make the long journey to lay their eggs and back again. Observing the lifestyles and travel patterns of penguins is one of the main reasons why researchers have traveled to Antarctica.
In spite of the bitter cold and the lack of human life on Antarctica, it is one of the most beautiful places on earth. It is very calm and peaceful with plenty of snow capped mountains to look at. There are Antarctica cruises that take you along the sites including Mount Erebus which is still classified as an active volcano.
There are also museums and other types of tourist attractions found in Antarctica. It is quite a remarkably fascinating eperience to find yourself in a place where there are no human inhabitants and where very few people have gone. This coupled with the sheer sereneness of the place, is a great place to enjoy the healthy solitude of nature.
